RoselleRoselle or Hibiscus Sabdariffa or 洛神花(LuoShenHua) is the beauty herb of the orient.

Aromatic but astringent, it is known for its anti-aging ability by promoting good skin and smoothen rough skin. This botanical red ruby produces red calyces which contains powerful antioxidants such as flavonoids, gossypetin, hibiscetine and sabdaretine (Biological Characteristics, Nutritional and Medicinal Value of Roselle, Hibiscus Sabdariffa)

They aid digestion and are also rich in ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), carotene, calcium, and iron that are important nutritions.

A Taiwanese book on Roselle stated that it protects the heart and liver. Apart from flavonoids, its red calyces contained another 3 antioxiding properties, Isoflavonoids, Protocatechuic acid and Anthocyanidins.

Lab tests revealed that they effectively reduces triglycerides (fat in the bloodstream), suppresses oxidation of low density lipoprotein, suppresses blood platelet agglutination, reduces clotting in the blood vessel, reduces atherosclerosis (hardening of the artery) and prevents heart vessel diseases.  Note: People with high triglycerides often have a high total cholesterol, a high LDL (bad) cholesterol and a low HDL (good) cholesterol level. Many people with heart disease also have high triglyceride levels.People with diabetes or who are obese are also likely to have high triglycerides.

Roselle is also known as a beverage after a hangover.

As a cooling herb, it provides relief during hot weather, reduces the heat in the body, amends circulatory insufficiencies, prevents cough, expels phlegm and quenches the thirst.

With its mild diuretic property, it facilitates smooth urination and is particularly good for people who have a temporary tendency toward water retention.  In healthy men, consumption of roselle has resulted in significant decreases in the urinary concentrations of creatinine, uric acid, citrate, tartrate, calcium, sodium, potassium and phosphate.

With its mild laxative effect, the leaves and flowers are used as a tonic tea for digestive and kidney functions. The ripe calyces, boiled in water, can be used as a drink to treat bilious attacks.
